Google to launch an Operating System- Google Chrome OS

As everyone knows Last month Microsoft challenged Google with their own 970p search engine, the (as of yet) little used Bing. Today Google fires back  with the announcement of their own operating system.Google announced on its blog yesterday that they’re releasing an operating system: Google Chrome OS. While the company already has a mobile operating system in Android this new one will be based on Chrome, Google’s web browser. The new operating system puts Google more squarely in competition with Microsoft Corp., which relies on its Windows operating system for more than half its revenue.

Google Chrome OS will be aimed initially at small, low-cost netbooks, but will eventually be used on PCs as well. Google said netbooks with Chrome OS could be on sale by the middle of 2010.

google said in its blog

Google Chrome OS is an open source, lightweight operating system that will initially be targeted at netbooks. Later this year we will open-source its code, and netbooks running Google Chrome OS will be available for consumers in the second half of 2010. Because we’re already talking to partners about the project, and we’ll soon be working with the open source community, we wanted to share our vision now so everyone understands what we are trying to achieve.

Google said that the operating systems that browsers run on were designed in an era where there was no web while  this OS is their attempt to rethink what operating systems should be.Unfortunately, Google didn’t divulge many other details, and it will be a while until anyone gets their hands on it.But still it is being speculated that

  • The new OS is designed to work with ARM and x86 chips, the main chip architectures in use today.
  • The new Chrome OS is expected to work well with many of the company’s popular software applications, such as Gmail, Google Calendar and Google Maps
  • It will be fast and lightweight, enabling users to access the Web in a few seconds, Google said.
  • The new OS is based on open-source Linux code, which allows third-party developers to design compatible applications.

Welll this step taken by Google is actually Google dropping the mother of all bombs on its rival, Microsoft.

Microsoft releases Windows 7 later this year to replace Windows Vista and Windows XP, which is eight years old. May be just as microsoft broke into Googles territory of search engines , similarly Google is trying to break into Microsoft’s territory of Operating system market which is till date controlled by windows . To see that if Chrome OS would shake windows from its position we would just have to wait till it is released . So just wait and watch!!
